Choosing the Right PDF Sewing Pattern: What to Look For

Choosing the Right PDF Sewing Pattern: What to Look For

There are a lot of sewing patterns out there now which is great, but it can also make it harder to choose.

A good place to start is sizing.

Make sure the pattern actually includes your measurements, and check whether it allows for grading between sizes if you need it. Most independent patterns are quite good at this now, but it’s still worth checking.

Then think about whether you’ll actually wear it.

It sounds obvious, but it’s easy to get drawn into a design that looks great in photos but doesn’t quite fit into your wardrobe. The patterns you come back to are usually the ones that work with what you already wear.

Multiple views can also be really useful.

Different sleeve options, lengths, or variations can make a pattern much more versatile, and give you a few different versions without needing to start from scratch each time.

Difficulty level matters too, especially if you’re newer to sewing.

Look for patterns that clearly explain the process and include good instructions. A well-written pattern can make a big difference to how enjoyable the project is.

And finally, think about longevity.

The best patterns are usually the ones you can imagine making more than once, in different fabrics, or slightly different versions.

At The Pattern Press, we’re building a collection of patterns with exactly this in mind, pieces you’ll actually want to sew and wear, not just make once.
