Tea gowns were worn during the later afternoon, marking the time between daywear and eveningwear. They were immensely popular because women could put the tight corsets aside for several hours and enjoy the comfort of these loose-fitting, casual styles of soft layered fabrics, yet still be tastefully presentable for visitors.

Our Afternoon Tea Dress, inspired by the Edwardian tea gowns from 1912-13, is adaptable to any occasion or time of day. This pattern was such a useful favorite that she continued to make and wear it her entire life. Cynthia hardly remembers her not wearing some version of it no matter what she was doing. This version extends this original pattern to children's sizes.

This apron will make any task a bit more charming. The two oversized patch pockets can be made with her grandmother’s own addition, a “tissue” pocket. This apron design was one Cynthia (long time Folkwear fan and employee) made from one her grandmother made and wore. Her grandmother drafted the pattern, offered in a 1900’s woman’s magazine that was borrowed from her mother. The pocket on the bib is the perfect place to store your eyeglasses, pen, or cellphone. Simply adjust the stitching to accommodate any object you need to keep handy. The two oversized patch pockets can be made with her grandmother’s own addition, a “tissue” pocket. hips, and skirts that ended just below the knee were the height of fashion. Fabric rationing had lead to the use of darts, pleats, tucks, and small gathers to create interest on dresses, rather than full skirts and sleeves. Our dress is based off an original hand-sewn dress from the late-1940s, when fabric had become a little more available, and when dresses were still word to do daily work as well as to go out on the town. This dress has an interesting bodice construction, with shoulder and waist pleats and darts, and a shawl-collar. Skirt darts create a flattering look while adding plenty of ease in the hip area. Elbow-length sleeves with cuffs make this nearly a year-round dress. An invisible side zipper closes the dress.

Suggested Fabrics: Light to medium weight woven fabrics with good drape such as cotton batiste and lawn, rayon challis, wool crepe, wool gauze, silk noil or silk crepe.

Sizing and Yardage Chart (pdf)

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/1017/4490/2427/files/replic-247_springhouse_comp_brightened.jpg?v=1776248839
231-big-sky-riding-skirt
231 Big Sky Riding Skirt

Sizes XS-3XL.

At the turn of the 20th century enterprising equestrian women, such as rodeo star Fanny Sperry Steele (1887-1983), wore a divided skirt, or split skirt, that enabled them to ride astride, but preserved the look of a skirt.
